It’s one of Michigan’s hottest casino-hotels and it’s been a staple in the city of Detroit for two decades. The Greektown Casino-Hotel has it all for a night out or a fun getaway.
If you’re in Detroit, be sure to visit this excellent casino-hotel that offers everything from table gaming to slots to a convenient location in one of city’s most vibrant areas.
We’ve assembled a quick guide to help you discover more about the Greektown Casino-Hotel.
The Greektown Casino-Hotel opened its doors in 2000 in the Greektown Historic District with the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians holding a majority stake. It was the only Detroit-based casino owned by Native Americans.
The tribe filed for bankruptcy protection during the 2008 Great Recession and sold its interests. Vici Properties and Penn National Gaming bought the casino in 2019.
Development for the casino began in 1996 when Michigan lawmakers allowed the construction of three gaming casinos in Detroit. The legislature was passed to assist the city of Detroit and state of Michigan to increase its revenues and slow the amount of money crossing the border into neighboring Windsor.
In 2006, another project began to build a hotel in relation to the casino. The city’s parking garage was demolished to make room for the hotel and construction was completed in 2009.
The hotel has changed hands in ownership several times. After the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians’ bankruptcy, two investor groups known as Greektown Superholdings, Inc. and Greektown Newco Sub, Inc. gained interests after the filing.
In 2013, Dan Gilbert’s Rock Gaming bought a majority stake in the casino as part of the billionaire’s investment plan to revive Detroit’s economy.
Rock Gaming rebranded as Jack Entertainment by the time the next big transfer hit, which came soon after the corporation announced a name change for the casino to the Jack Detroit Casino-Hotel Greektown. However, the rebrand for the casino was canceled and Gilbert sold it for $1 billion.
The buyers were Vici Properties and Penn National Gaming, which together bought the casino in May 2019. Vici Properties paid $700 million and Penn National bought up the rest with $300 million with the former purchasing the real estate assets and the latter for the operating business.
Prior to the 2019 sale, the hotel-casino was renovated in 2017 and 2018.
